Food pH and Weight Loss

Because of the growing awareness on the importance of having a healthy weight, Australians are now getting more and more health conscious. However, still a growing number of Australians are overweight, reports the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

A large number of overweight Australians are still thriving to lose weight, but to no avail. They’ve tried almost any method: exercise, diet, and medical means, but none of these seem to be effective. Recently, researchers have gathered new ideas and concluded that the pH level in the food we eat contributes greatly to how much we weigh.

pH Value – What Is This?

You may not know it, but all the foods we eat have a corresponding pH value. The pH value has a great influence on how the body reacts to the food. In addition, pH balance also affects bacterial growth in the body. Researchers discovered that alkaline diets have fewer calories compared to other fad diets.

Alkalinity Explained

Alkalinity is determined by a substance’s pH (Potential Hydrogen Scale). A substance with a pH level greater than 7.0 is alkaline, while those with pH lower than that level is acid. According to psychologist Peter Shepherd, the body’s pH level must be between 7.35 and 7.45 in order for it to stay healthy. Therefore, experts advise that we should eat more alkaline foods to help our pH levels rise.

Alkaline-Rich  Foods

The most common sources of alkaline are fruits and vegetables, such as peas, asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, garlic, onions, beets, spinach, green beans, grapes, lemons, lime, grapefruit, and blueberries. Some grains and nuts are also alkaline-forming, as well as green tea and spring water.

Calorie-Burning Properties

We all know that to lose weight, we must burn more calories than we consume. The body needs calories to operate, but excess calories will turn into fat deposits, which will lead to excess weight. Alkalizing foods are not only low in calories, the calories they generate are also easier to burn.

What Are The Benefits of Alkalizing

Consuming alkalizing foods can lead to lots of health benefits. Since it is known that the body’s pH level has a great influence on how our bodies function, maintaining alkaline pH will definitely bring yours to optimum health.

If you maintain alkalinity of your pH level, your  brain will be able to absorb more energy. Therefore, a diet with over 80% of alkaline food will promote proper brain function. In addition, the heart and other vital organs will also function well with the right level of blood alkalinity. Moreover, mineral absorption will improve while cell degeneration is controlled. Apart from these, a person that consumes more alkaline foods than acidic ones has a lower risk of suffering from fatigue, depression, and degenerative diseases.

Taking Precautions

Alkalizing, like other diets, need to be taken with precaution. Although a balanced alkalinity will result in  a lot of health benefits, excessive alkaline in the blood can lead to health problems. Excessive alkaline,or Alkalosis, may cause dizziness, hand tremors, nausea and vomiting, numbness, and confusion. So, before trying this diet out, it is best to consult your doctor.
