Difference Between Alkaline and Acidic Foods

Foods can be divided into two general groups: the alkaline and the acidic food groups. They are categorized based on their effects on the pH level of the bloodstream. Both foods, when taken excessively, may cause either of the two conditions: systemic acidosis or severe alkalosis. Therefore, it is important to take proper balance of both alkaline and acidic foods.

Understanding the pH Scale

It is important to understand how pH works in order to know more about the concept of alkaline and acidic. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. While 7 is considered neutral,  the range below 7 is acidic and higher than 7 is alkaline.

Normally, the body maintains a pH of 7.4 (slightly alkaline) through mineral deposits in the system and by withdrawing some of the needed minerals from bones and tissues. According to studies, up to 80% of our food intake everyday should come from alkalizing sources in order to keep the body’s natural acid-base balance.

What Are Acidic Foods?

Acidic foods do not mean being acidic in their natural state. Lemons and limes, for instance, might appear highly acidic, but once they are digested by the body system, they are actually highly alkaline-forming.

Acidic foods are those that create acids when digested. All kinds of meat are highly acidic, as well as refined carbohydrates, some grains, caffeine, canned juice, and sugary foods are highly acidic.

What Are Alkaline Foods?

Alkaline foods are composed mostly of the foods we already know are healthy for us.

They do not need to be highly alkaline in their normal state, rather, they need to produce alkaline on digestion in order to be categorized as alkaline.

Most fruits, such as lemons, limes, kiwis, and watermelon are highly alkaline. Vegetables, such as parsley, broccoli, celery, squash, carrots, cauliflower and zucchini are alkaline, as well. Wild rice, chestnuts, and raw sugar are among the considered alkaline foods, too.

Acidic or Alkaline?

As a rule, we must maintain the proper balance of acidity and alkalinity in our system. In order to do this, we must eat a balance of alkalizing and acidifying foods. However, since we need to keep our system within the pH range of 7.4,more alkalizing foods are necessary.

According to natural health experts, eating alkalizing foods will promote optimum health. Well, this might be true, since most alkalizing foods are actually health foods. Eliminating processed foods from your diet and minimizing the consumption of animal products will contribute to good health.

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, and minimize your meat, fish dairy and refined carbohydrate intake. If it is possible, totally eliminate processed foods from your diet. Try to incorporate a large part of alkaline forming foods to your daily diet.

Alkaline and acidic foods are different. They play their unique roles for us to have a properly-working system and healthy body. Knowing their differences is important. If we are armed with such knowledge, we will be able to determine which food groups are good for us.
